A COLLABORATIVE POST
WRITTEN BY BOOM BOX POST

We recently brought on a new Boom Box Post apprentice. It is our pleasure to introduce Nathan Yamaguchi! We had a chance to ask him a few questions to better get to know him.

What sparked your interest in sound for Television/Film?

I became interested in sound for TV/Film during an undergraduate class about ProTools. The intricacies of mixing and routing quickly captured my attention, pushing me to explore how to express emotions and narrative themes through sound. Prior to taking the class, I had never thought of sound for TV/Film and how it’s made. While studying for my Master’s in Sound Design at SCAD, I was able to work on a few short films, leading to a greater appreciation of the art form and its complexities, while configuring my workflow for creativity and efficiency.

How did you find out about the apprenticeship?

After graduating from SCAD, I had an opportunity to have a conversation with Boom Box Post owner, Kate Finan through a mutual connection. During our talk, Kate explained how the apprenticeship program worked and I became highly interested in joining. I was also able to visit the Boom Box Post studio and I was amazed by the facilities and the professional environment.

What do you hope to gain from this apprenticeship?

I hope to learn the ins and outs of an audio post production studio, as well as further developing my skills in sound design. Also, I am looking forward to picking at the brains of the seasoned audio professional at Boom Box Post in order to understand their creative process and how they capture their audio visions.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ANIMATED TV SHOW OR MOVIE?

My favorite animated TV show is Evangelion Neon Genesis. Nostalgia plays a big role in this being my favorite, however, the psychological aspects and character development always brings me back into it.

WHAT WAS THE LAST SHOW YOU BINGE WATCHED?

The last show I binged was “The Bear” season 2. Enticing cooking plus sporadic drama, there is not much more to ask for in my opinion.

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A SOUND EFFECT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

If I had to describe myself as a sound effect, I would describe myself as a LFE rumble sound effect. In the right speaker configuration, the LFE rumble becomes key in conveying the impact of the scene. And, mostly because I love the feeling of LFE rumbles.

Thank you Nathan! Boom Box Post is extremely excited to have you, and we are looking forward to working with you during your apprenticeship process!
