We are delighted to announce the addition of a new apprentice to our Boom Box team! Please welcome Andrew Shirey! We took the opportunity to sit down with him for a brief Q&A to learn more about our newest team member.
What sparked your interest in sound for Television/Film?
I knew I wanted to get into film at a very early age but I hadn’t really thought about working in sound until right before college. My local university offered an audio program and I heard great things about it. As soon as I joined the program I fell in love with sound and the mixture of creativity and technical skill you have to have to work in the audio post industry.
How did you find out about the apprenticeship?
I’ve wanted to work at an audio post house ever since I graduated college. I looked through as many post houses as I could find in the Los Angeles area, and immediately Boom Box Post stuck out. From first glance, it seemed like a very creative and fun work environment, not to mention the apprenticeship program which I hadn’t really seen anywhere else.
SO FAR, WHAT IS SOMETHING NEW YOU HAVE LEARNED FROM THIS POSITION?
I’ve already learned so many things in my short time working at Boom Box Post. I’d say the most important of those is how the industry works as a whole. Learning the day to day of the audio post process has been super interesting and I know it’ll be extremely helpful in the long run.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ANIMATED TV SHOW OR MOVIE?
I really love the Studio Ghibli films. My favorite has to be Spirited Away. I think those films have really great subtle sound design as well.
IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A SOUND EFFECT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
If I had to describe myself as a sound effect, it would probably be the tinnitus ringing sound after you get a concussion. I feel like that describes me pretty well.
WHAT WAS THE LAST SHOW YOU BINGE WATCHED?
The last show I binged was The Bear Season 2. I didn’t think they could top season 1, but they did!
