What makes Invincible stand out from other shows you work on?

Unlike most of the shows I’ve worked on, Invincible is explicitly for an adult audience. With in-your-face violence, gore, and adult themes, we don’t have to be as cautious about keeping anything age appropriate. The goal of the soundscape for this show is realism. We want the audience to feel like they are part of the world. This, along with knowledge of the intended audience, allows us to shoot for realistic sound design, and to hyper-focus on some of the more subtle sound details. A lot of animation has wall-to-wall action, but Invincible is quite mindful that some of the most impactful stories can happen in relatively quiet moments, especially moments that are sound design-centric and have minimal score. It’s always incredibly fun designing sounds for superhero action scenes, but from Shrinking Rae getting crushed inside of a body to Mark drenched in Angstrom’s blood, some of Invincible’s most impactful moments are also some of the most intimate and visceral.

What were some of the custom sounds designed for this episode?

Invincible is jam-packed with custom sound design and editorial. From aggressive superhero sounds like Rex Splode’s explosive powers, to more subtle custom-recorded ambient sounds like the Chicago El Trains passing by, you can hear our signature sounds in every nook and cranny of the show. If I had to pick a few, my favorites would be Angstrom’s portals/interdimensional travel sounds, Atom Eve’s signature powers, and the Sequids.

What was the most fun sound to design this season?

I think the sound of Shrinking Rae getting crushed inside of Komodo Dragon’s body, and then crawling out of his neck cavity after he gets his head blown off. It’s such an absurd situation, and it’s fun to imagine what we would hear in a moment like this. Is it mostly flesh and blood? Any bones crunching? Would we hear Rae’s screams through Komodo Dragon’s chest? When working on a scene that wild, you can get your creative juices flowing and imagine what something like that would sound like. In our case, it involved lots of Jell-o and macaroni and cheese!

OUTSTANDING SOUND MIXING FOR A COMEDY OR DRAMA SERIES (HALF-HOUR) AND ANIMATION

  • Production Mixers: Jessica Gutierrez & Sergio Martinez

  • ADR Mixer: Mark De La Fuente

  • Score Mixer: John Chapman

Working on Season 2 of Invincible was an absolute blast!  The show has so much great plot and so many great action scenes; It’s a real creative playground for the sound team, including the mixers.  Mixing Invincible can be challenging at times however.  We worked very hard through the season to ensure sonic continuity from Season 1 and made sure that all of the new material we created and mixed fit into the Invincible universe.  My favorite parts of mixing it were designing the subtle processing on all of the non-human character’s voices and creating drama and emotion during the most pivotal, climactic scenes.

We want to give a thank you to Prime Video for letting us be a part of the team! We truly love working on this show. Please check out the trailer for it below:
