BOOM BOX POST
To celebrate Halloween in a gruesome style, we decided to do part two of: Death by Sound Effect. We came up with a cause of death and put our editors to the task to create a gross, gruesome sound build. Let’s see what they came up with! Check out Part One here!
Katie Jackson - Death by Exsanguination
I had to look this one up, but it means death by blood loss. It's up to your interpretation as to what caused this bleeding, but when I was designing this I envisioned pulling something out that causes you to bleed out, like a spear. I used lots of different textures to make the blood sound dynamic, including mud, squeezing an orange, slime, and wringing out a sponge. It was missing something, so I added a heart pumping the blood out to ensure a faster death.
Jayson Niner - Death by Dismemberment
When given the prompt 'Death by Dismemberment' I thought I could go one of two ways, a clean cut of the limbs or a ripping and hacking approach. I couldn't decide so I went with both! The build starts with a person getting their arms ripped off in a very slow and painful manner. To achieve this I used the sound of bell peppers ripping leading up to a final celery and wood branch snap to signify the final bone break. At the end I have a metal shing sound combined with a whoosh leading to a squishy splat sound to represent a blade cutting off the victims head. To really sell this imagery I then put a low multi whoosh and wood tumble to paint the picture of the head flying through the air and landing on the ground.
peter kay - Death by Train
For “Death by Train” I created a small scene that includes the train approaching, and running over a human body on the tracks. I added some far away train horns to indicate that a train is approaching. I added in some ‘train bys’ as the train hits the body. For the body being hit, I wanted it to be gory and have the sense that the body is being mangled by the train. I added some vegetable breaking sounds and fruit squishing sounds to create a realistic gory moment.
Natalia Saavedra - Death by Electrocution
I took “Death by Electrocution” to mean that someone has been sentenced to death in the electrocution chamber. I created the sequence that starts with powering up the mechanism to create electricity, and it transitions to the final shock which in turns burns the brain and body.
Great job to our editors for this festive sound design game!
Which one do you think sounded the goriest?
